What does it mean to eat right?

Don’t Feed Lions Leaves and Don’t Feed Giraffes Meat!

What you eat is certainly a hot topic today and there are lots of conflicting ideas out there about food and diet. You’ve probably heard of the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, Jenny Craig, The Zone Diet, Weight Watchers and many more. Each of these has their own view about what you should eat, how much you should eat and when you should eat it. Each of the above diets is promoted by a collection of doctors, nutritionists and celebrities. In short, it’s hard to know just who to listen to today about what to eat.

With all these culinary voices shouting for your attention, how can you know what food is right for you? The answer lies in the saying, “you don’t feed lions leaves and you don’t feed giraffes meat!” The studies of Weston Price showed way back in the 1930’s that we need to eat according to our biological heritage. Just as lions and giraffes have been shaped by evolution to have certain dietary requirements, so too have humans. If you want to know how to eat, it’s as simple as looking at how your ancestors ate. That is the basis of the metabolic typing diet. It’s only by the efforts of the modern food production industry and its marketing machine that we’ve drifted away from our ancestral diets. The results speak for themselves - increasing obesity, stress, fatigue and disease.

Your dietary needs are shaped by what your ancestors ate. That means the best thing you can do for your health this week is to discover your dietary heritage and use that knowledge to shape your food choices.
