Once you know what your dreams are, how will you reach them?Your Business Plan is the Roadmap to Your Dreams
In the course of my practice, clients often want to know why they struggle so much to reach their dreams. There are lots of reasons this might be so, but one of my first answers is always that most people just don’t have a business plan. That’s right, a business plan. The journey to your legacy is just like any other journey. If you don’t know the right routes to take, you’re not likely to get to your destination. The key function of a business plan is to provide you with a set of concrete steps to take you from where you (and your business) are in life now to where you want to be.The business plan focuses your money and energy on the specific steps you need to reach your dream. It helps you to forecast and weather times of trouble and shows investors that your business is worth their contributions. And even if you don’t want to run a company of your own, a business plan is essential. If you’re employed by someone else, you are a sole proprietor and your boss is your best customer. A business plan is your guide to becoming the best you can be at the job that you have, and leads you to the job or business you love. If you aren’t in the job that you love, your plan will chart out the steps necessary to move to one that you do love. Your business plan describes the ways you will improve your skill set, it sets a strategy to market yourself to the right employer and plans a course for advancement once you’ve been hired. In short, a business plan isn’t just a plan for businesses, it’s the guide to your legacy.
You can begin to develop your business plan this week! Set aside some time and write down one goal that you have for your professional life and plan out the steps you need to take to reach that goal. If you’ve never written out a goal before, you’ll find that the structure and focus your plan provides you helps you to reach your goal more effectively than you thought possible.
