Why do so many people with advanced degrees earn so much less than their education merits?Gain Knowledge not Just Information
Today, we have the highest number of “well educated” people, including an overwhelming number of people with masters degrees and PhD’s, that earn far less than they should based on their educational status. In fact, some statistics say that approximately 50% of those people with university degrees are not even using their degrees in a related field within five years of graduation.95% of education imparted in academic systems worldwide is in what is called the mathematical-logical format. What makes this so amazing is the fact that only 5-8% of people learn effectively that way. The result is that most people with a degree collect a lot of information that they just don’t know how to put to use. Information is not knowledge until it is applied in an environment specific to the intended application. In other words, I tell my students that information is not knowledge until it is changing someone’s life for the better!
How can you be sure that you gain knowledge rather than simply accumulating information? Know your learning style! In general, people fall into one of the following basic learning styles:
a. Visual dominant learner – someone who needs to watch instruction first
b. Auditory dominant learner – someone who needs to hear the instructions first
c. Kinesthetic dominant learner – someone who needs to feel the instruction, usually by doing it with guidance from the teacher
d. Mathematical-logical learner – someone that learns best by reading booksIf you are trying to learn in a way not conducive to your particular style, you’ll find you retain little and what you do retain, you have a hard time putting to good use.
This week, ask your self how you learn best. The answer will provide you with the key to gaining real knowledge and real success!
