Do you know the difference between hearing and listening? To Listen Means to be Present
Hearing is a function, a sense carried out by our hearing apparatus. Hearing offers us awareness of our environment. As a survival sense, hearing never shuts off. Just as you can feel a bug crawling on your skin even when asleep, your sense of hearing works 24/7, offering essential information about your environment.Listening on the other hand is an act of directing your consciousness, of paying attention with the intention of understanding what you are hearing. One always hears the sounds entering their ears, yet one must choose to listen. Listening offers us additional information, allowing us to make better decisions. To listen means to be present. The reason so many people hear without listening is identical to the reason that so many find it almost impossible to meditate. They can’t be present with themselves!
To improve your listening skills, start by simply being present with your Self:
- Listen to your breath.
- Listen to your voice as you sing or talk (try humming if you prefer.)
- Listen to the very words you choose to use when communicating with others, particularly the words used at times when you felt you were not being listened to!
- Listen to your inner voice, your conscience, or your intuition. This week, make the choice to listen. As you grow in your ability to be present with your Self, you will become more and more capable of holding another’s voice, presence, and communication in your consciousness – you will be able to both hear, and listen to them!

P.S. For those of you who haven’t yet called in, please join me for a free teleconference on Wednesday, December 13th, 2006 at 11:30am PST. We’ll talk about all the tools available for you to improve your listening skills. You’ll find out how you can understand your self and those around you better than ever!
You can also listen to any of our previous teleconference calls on our Free Audio page, which is under the Special Features section at the Center.
In addition to improving your listening skills, P~P~S Success Mastery Practitioners benefit from the program in so many ways. P~P~S Practitioner Matthew Wallden had this to say about his work with Paul Chek, “Training in Paul's techniques brought many new personal and professional challenges into my life, which Paul successfully and skillfully guided me through. My sense of personal and professional worth has grown exponentially and yet realistically." Visit the What People are Saying page at the P~P~S Success Mastery Center to hear more.
