P~P~S Success Weekly Bulletin Monday, November 27, 2006. Paul's thought of the week: Whose values are you working for? Finding the Right Career Your values define you. They describe what it is that really matters to you in your life. They are the qualities you admire in others and want to emulate yourself. They represent the way you want to be treated and to treat others. They capture what it is in your environment that is meaningful to you and so much more. It is impossible to live your legacy unless you are living in harmony with your values, and leading a life that isn’t in harmony with those values can be extremely damaging mentally, physically and spiritually. Your values must be embodied in the daily actions of your life. To act in a way that contradicts those values or doesn’t support them can be painful! We notice that hurt when others transgress against our values as well and if your job doesn’t harmonize with those values, every day at work is laborious. I tell all of my clients that if you aren’t working for your values, you’re working for someone else’s. Working for someone else’s values can be a quick road to stress and depression. The best way for you to ensure that you are living your legacy and you are minimizing the stresses in your life is to ensure that you are working for your own values. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to have run your own business, but if you’re going to be working for someone else, your values and theirs had best harmonize or you’re just asking for unhappiness! Put yourself on the path to your dream career this week and take the time to think carefully about your values and the values embodied in your current work. How do they line up? Not only will this simple analysis offer you a tool to diagnose the source of many stresses you may be feeling at work, but your values will also provide you a guide to future career decisions. ~Paul Chek P.S.
