What is a Meme?

What is a Meme?

Conceptualized in 1976 by Oxford scientist Richard Dawkins, the science of memetics offers a powerful framework for understanding how beliefs, concepts, ideas, musical jingles, traditions, recipes and all sorts of other cultural phenomena spread and evolve in a population. The main insight of this science is to change how we view these aspects of our lives. Rather than treating them as owned by us, memetics views these mental entities, called memes, as living beings, that can inhabit any human mind, where they compete with each other for real estate. In this way, we are infected or infested by these ideas and beliefs. And like a viral infection, memes can spread too.

It might sound odd to think of our beliefs as living creatures, but consider the really irritating song that gets stuck in your head for days at a time. It sure feels a lot like an infection. Hum a few bars and before you know it, your friends have it stuck in their heads too. That’s a meme.

Memes can direct your behavior for better or worse!

Your Memes Can Direct Your Behavior for Better or Worse

Memetics offers more important insights than why we remember commercial jingles. Memetics helps us understand why we do things that aren’t good for us. More often than you think, these little mind viruses cause us to act in ways that aren’t in our own interest. Our memes quietly direct us to behave in ways that allow them to reproduce.

Here's a favorite example from the P~P~S Program, “have a Coke and a smile.” Sounds harmless enough, but the meme isn’t good for you at all. The idea that drinking Coke will make you happy was supposed to get you to drink the product and it works. Why? Because the meme convinces you to drink the product and the product reinforces the meme since it does make you feel superficially good. But we know that drinking Coke isn’t all that healthy for you. It’s a lot of high-fructose corn syrup, food coloring and caffeine, and we understand pretty well how sugar and caffeine in large quantities can adversely affect our wellbeing.

So why do we act against our self interest in being healthy here? Because this clever meme provides short-term happiness, and in return we subconsciously choose to allow it to direct our behavior. What's in your refrigerator now that a meme may have driven you to buy?
